Tour Details

Thru‐hiker enthusiasts know the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) as one third of the ‘Triple Crown’ of long distance hiking in the USA, along with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Appalachian Trail. At the heart of this adventure, we will carry a full pack for a 4‐day trek on a short, but incredibly scenic loop section of the CDT in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. A guide favorite, this backpacking route offers miles of trekking above treeline with outstanding views, day hikes to gorgeous alpine lakes, and lots of wildlife viewing opportunities.

Where most of the CDT runs along the actual divide, this loop allows us to stand atop and peer over both sides of the Continental Divide. On our way to the main trail, we enjoy classic day hikes to cascading waterfalls, alpine lakes, and dramatic viewpoints and travel along Trail Ridge Road ‐ the highest paved road in the USA. As a grand finale we are rewarded with a fun day of introductory paddling on the Upper Colorado River, a soak in a hot spring, and a celebratory lunch at a local brew pub. No backpacking experience is required, but participants must be in good health and able to hike up and down hills at high altitude for 3 days with a backpack weighing about 30lbs/15kg.

What to Expect

We plan for an early departure from camp each morning to take advantage of cooler temperatures and daylight hours. We choose idyllic locations mid to 2/3rd of the way through our hike for our lunch break and plan to be setting up at our next site by about 4‐5pm when we will be served a snack and settle into camp before dinner is prepared and served under the stars.

Participants will be responsible for setting up their tents and are invited to (but not required to) participate in camp chores like collecting and filtering water and cleaning dishes. The guides will do the rest including all food handling.

Itinerary

Day 1

We will meet this morning at an airport area hotel in Denver for our departure into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. We stop to enjoy a nice warm up day hike to three different waterfalls in the Wild Basin before heading to our comfortable front country campsite where we learn the basics of building and maintaining a campfire (camp at 2550m). Enjoy a sumptuous grill dinner and campfire as the setting for our group briefing.

Hiking elevations: min 2600m/max 2890m

Day 2

Today we head out for a classic loop hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s easy to see why this is a local favorite, with visits to four separate alpine lakes – Bear Lake, Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and Lake Haiyaha – plus a scenic 30 foot waterfall that thunders down a small gorge on Glacier Creek. The route offers sweeping views of Hallett Peak and Longs Peak reflecting in the shores of the crystal clear lakes. Along the way, we choose an idyllic lake-side spot for a gourmet picnic lunch on the trail. This evening, back at our front country campsite, we enjoy another big meal before our true backcountry adventure begins the next day.

Hiking elevations: min 2900m/max 3100 or 3350m

Day 3

We leave early this morning for a journey on the highest paved road and one of the Top Ten Highways in the USA, Trail Ridge Road, where we have the chance to spot wildlife such as big horn sheep and black bears right along the side of the road. On our way to the main trailhead for the Continental Divide Loop, we stop to enjoy some short hikes on alpine ridges with sweeping mountain views (max 3750m). We arrive at the trailhead (2650m), shoulder our packs, and start off on our backpacking adventure. It’s a short day to get used to the altitude and the weight of our packs. Tonight we enjoy our first night in the complete serenity of backcountry camping (2870m).

Day 4

After breakfast, we pack up and head back out on the CDT. We begin by traversing the wide open expanse of Big Meadow, keeping our eyes peeled for the abundant wildlife that call this area home. Along the way, we enjoy the company of Tonahutu Creek, the beautiful Granite Falls, and the ever changing landscapes as we ascend into the higher forest of the park. Tonight, we camp at over 3050 metres. There is an optional side hike from camp to Lake Haynach for those who want to stretch their legs without a heavy pack.

Day 5

Today is the biggest day of the trip! We will climb from camp up out of the forest and into the alpine tundra. As we work our way through this fragile landscape, the guides will point out some of the survival strategies of various plants and animals in this harsh environment. For several miles, we will be almost on top of the Continental Divide (max 3750m), the waters on the east side work
their way into the Mississippi River and the Atlantic Ocean, while those on the west side head head towards the Colorado River and the Pacific. After traversing the tundra, we will drop back down into the North Inlet Valley where we camp nestled among the trees again (2830m).

Day 6

We happily strap on just a day pack today and feel light on our feet as we head out to on some spectacular side trails to two classic Alpine Lakes – Nokoni and Nanita – nestled on the side of Ptarmigan Peak. We enjoy lunch along the shore of one of the lakes where the hardier members of our expedition may choose to take a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water. There are optional side hikes up to tremendous views of Mount Alice, Longs Peak, and Andrews Peak.

Max elevation 3430m

Day 7

Today, we work our way down and out of the backcountry along the North Inlet, bringing the backpacking portion of our trip to an end. However, the adventure does not stop here. Along the way, we pass Big Pool, Cascade Falls and Summerland Park which is home to many moose. Tonight, we stay in a lakeside front country camp (2480m) where we will enjoy a sumptuous feast of fresh food.

Day 8

We leave our camp in the morning for a scenic drive down the Colorado River, through the small ranching community of Kremmling and over a pass in the Gore Range where we re-join the Colorado River at Pumphouse Recreation Site. Here we meet our guides and are issued PFDs, paddles, and inflatable kayaks. There will be a choice of double or single kayaks so either team up or go it alone! After safety instructions and paddling tips, we head off down the river. Along the way, we can take a soak in a small natural warm springs, enjoy a riverside lunch, and hopefully spot bald eagles, otters, and maybe a black bear. Return to camp for one more celebratory dinner around the fire. The Paine Grande reaches 3,248m and is a point of interest for climbers from around the world. As an option, you may continue up to two mountain lakes close to the tree line at the head of the valley, an hour and a half return journey. We return down the valley the same way we ascended, then continue on to Refuge Cuernos (2 hours), pausing to appreciate the waterfalls and to witness the river sculptured valley before us.

Note: At busy times we will be camping in the grounds of this refugio.

Note: If you would like to trek without your full packs for days 8 & 9, your main luggage can be stored at Refugio Pehoe and will be transferred to Torres on day 9. Please request this with your guide. You will still need to carry enough personal equipment for the next two days.

What you carry: No porters. You will need to carry your main pack and day pack.

Day 9

We will enjoy a hearty breakfast prepared by the guides, then all pitch in to pack up the tents and other camp gear. Once this is done we make a short drive for a final hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. We may only go a mile or two up the East Inlet but the reward is another spectacular valley view and an enticing invitation to return for more exploration. During the scenic drive back to the Denver area we re-cross the Continental Divide, enjoying a last lunch together at a local pub along the way. Expect to arrive back in Denver between 4-6pm.

Geography and Weather
Country Information
Weather

The United States is a vast country. However, most of the National Parks are located in the Western part of the country, reducing the area of interest to the walker significantly. The West (anything west of the Rocky Mountains) consists of 10 large states. Two mountain ranges cut the area from north to south along the lines of plate tectonics. While the Pacific Northwest has active cone shaped volcanoes, the rest of the area does not. Here we only see the remnants of ancient volcanic activities – in lava flows, hot springs, volcanic fissures and calderas.

The Rocky Mountains have unpredictable weather which can change rapidly. As with other highland climates, the climate changes with increasing altitude (At least 10 to 15 degrees cooler in the higher elevations at any given time). In general, the Rockies have mild summers (June‐Aug) with sunny mornings, afternoon thunderstorms and clear nights. In the fall (Sept/Oct) there are cool, crisp days, wind, and decreasing precipitation. It has snowed at the highest elevations in the park during every month of the year and in hiking season, temperatures can range from freezing overnight to 25C during the daytime, so it’s best to be prepared for any kind of weather.

Accommodation in Denver is not included in this package.

All travelers will require a valid passport to enter the United States and your passport should still be valid for 6 months after you return from your trip. If you are travelling on more than
one passport, please use the same passport for the entire trip. The following information also applies to visitors entering the USA under the Visa Waiver Program (including Australians, New Zealanders, and British):

From 1 April 2016, all travelers wishing to enter the US under the VWP will need to hold a passport with the following criteria:

If your passport was issued before October 26, 2005, it must be ‘machine readable’ (with 2 lines of letters, numbers and <<< at the bottom)

If your passport was issued between October 26, 2005 and October 25, 2006, it must be machine readable and include a digital photo

If your passport was issued on or after October 26, 2006, it must be an e‐passport with a digital photo and an integrated chip (with this internationally recognized symbol <http://www.dhs. gov/ e‐passports> on the front cover).

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct passport and that there are sufficient blank pages for any visas required and for entry/departure stamps.

Many travelers to the United States (including Australians, New Zealanders and British) entering the country require a prearranged, approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This is obtained electronically for passport holders from countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. The authorization must be in hand upon entry to the USA and can be obtained at the following official website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov for a fee of US$14, payable by credit or debit card. It is very important to make payments through the official website. Visa Waiver travelers who have not obtained approval through ESTA should expect to be denied boarding on any air carrier bound for the United States.

From 21 January 2016 most people who have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria since March 2011, or are dual nationals of these countries, will no longer qualify for entry under the Visa Waiver Program and existing ESTAs could be revoked. You will instead need to apply for a visa from the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. Certain exemptions apply on a case‐by‐case basis. Bottom line: If in doubt, please contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.

Please consult your reservation consultant/travel agent if you have any questions regarding your eligibility for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

All other passport holders should check with the relevant consul.

Please bear in mind that visas may be required for countries you are visiting en route or transiting through on the way to your destination. It is important that you check the requirements of all countries you will visit. Visa costs and requirements do change regularly so we suggest you check with your travel agent or Rogue Adventures reservations consultant. It is your responsibility to obtain all necessary visas.
